Money Math: Lessons for Life Learning how to manage money is an important part of becoming a responsible adult but a recent study has shown that there is an appalling ignorance of monetary concepts among students. Without proper education in personal finance, today’s young students may become tomorrow’s bankruptcy candidates. Money Math offers upper elementary and middle school teachers an opportunity to apply Math and Economics to real life situations – increasing the rate of learning success. Lessons focus on the importance of math in making sound personal financial decisions and work as skill-building blocks to equip youth for future decisions. There are hands-on activities involving income, savings, budgeting, decorating, taxes and careers. Lessons such as “The Secret to Becoming a Millionaire,” “Wallpaper Woes,” Math and Taxes: A Pair to Count on,” and “Spreading the Budget” will be explored and related to the Academic Content Standards for Mathematics. Money Math is also a great tool for reinforcing math concepts covered on the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT).
