To Arms! Broadside

Description:

This broadside asks for volunteers to fight in the Civil War. It reflects Northern fears about and attitudes towards the war in the wake of the Battle of Gettysburg. It fans fears of invasion by mentioning Confederate troops in Pennsylvania, and also encourages men to sign up voluntarily in order to avoid the draft.
The full text of the broadside reads: "To Arms! Rebels are invading our Border. Already 30,000 have crossed into Pennsylvania; and the President and Governor calls for 30,000 volunteers from Ohio, to defend our soil and our flag. In a few days all will be subject to a draft for three years, and all who go for six months will be exempt from the DRAFT! Now is the time to escape the DRAFT and DEFEND YOUR HOMES! The undersigned are authorized to raise a COMPANY! And will hold a Meeting at [blank] ON [blank] for that purpose. COME ONE, COME ALL! Let every PATRIOT lay his shoulder to the wheel. June 17, 1863 JOHN H. SIMMONS, EDWARD M. KELLUM."
