Pardon/Franchise cartoon

Description:

These two cartoons show the image of Columbia (the United States) and two of the dilemmas faced by the United States after the Civil War. In the summer of 1865, radical Republicans faced strong public opinion in favor of lenient treatment of the South, speedy restoration of the Union, and good feelings, which would leave former slaves with little more than freedom. The first cartoon shows members of the Confederacy, led by General Robert E. Lee, with pardon papers. The second cartoon shows Columbia with an African American soldier who fought for the Union and lost a leg during the Civil War. Between the two cartoons Columbia questions the sincerity of their repentance and why she should trust them with civil rights and the power of the vote, but not give the disabled African American Union veteran the same rights.
