Family Letter to Thomas Bissell in Monoghan, Ireland

Description:

Sara and Edward Martin of East Liverpool, Ohio sent this letter, dated November 13, 1840, to relative Thomas Bissell in Monoghan, Ireland. The letter urges Bissell to come to America and tells of the writer's journey to Ohio via Lake Erie, a canal boat, and the railroad. The author remarks on the work habits of Americans and hopes of buying land in Columbiana County, and explains that the weather in Ohio is "not so dull and gloomy" as in the old country.
