Matilda Thomas Birthday FrakturDescription:Fraktur, named for the "fractured" or broken style of script, is a Pennsylvania German folk art tradition. Used to mark special occasions such as birthdays, baptisms and weddings, these documents were decorated by hand with watercolor illustrations. Common motifs include hearts, stars, fruit and flowers. This fraktur from Perry County, Ohio marks the 15th birthday of Matilda Thomas. An earlier example of fraktur is available at Ohio Memory courtesy of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society.
