Moses Cleaveland Speech to the Six Nations

Description:

Moses Cleaveland (1754-1806) was born in Connecticut and studied law at Yale. A shareholder in the Connecticut Land Company, he was asked to survey the company lands. At Buffalo Creek (now Buffalo, New York), he was stopped by a delegation of American Indians of the Six Nations who felt they had claim to the territory. After an exchange of goods, the Cleaveland party proceeded on the south side of Lake Erie to the Cuyahoga River, where Cleaveland surveyed and plotted out the city named for him.

In this address, Cleaveland expresses his intentions and waits for word from the Six Nations. The original document resides with the Western Reserve Historical Society.
