This is a photograph of the painting by artist Thomas Coke Ruckle (1811-1891) of cattle and wagons passing the Fairview Inn in Maryland at the beginning of the National Road west. The original painting is owned by the Maryland Historical Society, and can be viewed here on page 4 , courtesy of the City of Baltimore.
