First Train into WheelingDescription:The Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road Company was chartered in 1827 with building a railroad linking the Atlantic Ocean with the Ohio River as an alternative transportation route to the Erie Canal. This photograph shows a group of people celebrating as the first B. & O. locomotive reached Wheeling, Virginia (now West Virginia) in the winter of 1852.
