Every Dog Has His Day Cartoon
Description:
During the latter decades of the nineteenth century, immigration from Asia caused some Americans to fear that a torrent of Asians might affect American society. In particular, organized labor feared that American workers would be replaced.
Nast's cartoon chides Americans for their short-sightedness--that is, their wishing to curtail new immigrants when they themselves were immigrants or descendants of immigrants. In addition, he related the antagonism of American Indians. Nast's comment adjacent to the Black American--"My Day Is Coming"--can be considered prophetic.
