The Emancipation of the Negroes Cartoon
Description:
This cartoon celebrates the emancipation of the slaves that officially took place on January 1, 1863. The centerpiece is of a former slave family finally being united. The image is surrounded by scenes of African Americans being paid for thei labor and other benefits from emancipation contrasting with the scenes of slave auctions and angry masters with whips chasing their runaway slaves.
