Using Primary Sources: Travels Through Time

Overview:

Participants are divided into small groups. Each group receives a map. Using the appropriate activity sheet, each group looks at their map to determine its significance. Then, tables switch maps and try to discern what historical events may have occurred using information from the maps. Students then add two events to a timeline.

List of Materials:

Note - Maps may be printed on large scale printers, but printing maps can be expensive. Try printing on transparencies and projecting images for the groups.

Instructions:

  1. Print enough Packet of Primary Source Materials, and Travels Through Time Activity Worksheets so each group has one packet and one worksheet.
  2. Show “Using Primary Sources in the Classroom”  PowerPoint to the students and discuss the use of maps and what we can learn from them.
  3. Introduce activity
    • Each group receives a map.
    • The group then analyzes their map using the appropriate worksheet.
  4. After all groups have been given sufficient time to work, the groups switch maps.
    • Each group analyzes their new map in order to determine what historic events occurred.
  5. Have groups come together to construct a timeline based on their observations and conclusions. (Note: Teachers may provide students with a partially completed timeline and have them correctly locate the two events they identified. )

Primary Source Materials:

These pages show the primary sources in more detailed, including description, creator, creation place, and date for each source. For ease in application of the Travels Through Time Activity, all sources have been converted into one PDF document that will print one source per page (see Packet of Primary Source Materials).
