Manasseh Cutler Map, 1787

Description:

Manasseh Cutler - lawyer, minister, doctor and scientist - was a principal stockholder in the Ohio Company of Associates. In 1787, as Congress adopted the Northwest Ordinance, Cutler negotiated with Congress for the purchase of a large section of southeastern Ohio for the Ohio Company.

This map accompanied a pamphlet written by Cutler to promote the sale of Ohio Company lands. It shows the Ohio Company lands divided into townships, with lots set aside "for Schools and and Religions." An inset shows "A plan of the City to be built on the Muskingum River," which was established as Marietta in 1788. The map measures 19.62" x 26.29."
