John McBride Speech to Nelsonville Miners

Description:

This speech was made by John McBride, President of the State Miner's Union to the miners of Nelsonville, Ohio in 1884.

In 1883, several Hocking Valley coal companies consolidated into the Columbus and Hocking Coal and Iron Company, and the next spring, decided to reduce miners' wages. The miners refused to accept the wage cut and went on strike. In the speech, McBride makes mention of the strike and the importation of foreign workers.
