Wampum Belt Presented to Anthony Wayne

Description:

This wampum belt was created by a Miami Indian and presented to General Anthony Wayne at the negotiations leading to the Treaty of Greenville in 1795. The belt is made of purple and white shells on buckskin, and measures 29 inches long and approximately 3 and a half inches wide. Such belts were created and used as ceremonial gifts. Contrary to popular mythology, Indians did not use wampum as a form of money.
