Engraved Portrait of Tens-qua-ta-wa,

or the Shawnee Prophet

Description:

This is a hand-colored lithograph copied from a portrait of Tens-qua-ta-wa, painted by James Otto Lewis at Detroit in 1823. The engraving appear in Lewis's Aboriginal Portfolio, published in ten parts beginning in 1835. This painting, created at the request of Governor Cass, was the first of Lewis's many Indian portraits. Tens-qua-ta-wa, better known as The Prophet, was the brother of Tecumseh. In 1805, he had a religious experience that led him to reject the customs and goods of the Europeans and to espouse Indian unity against these interlopers.
