Using Primary Sources - Dateline: History - Analyzing and Interpreting Collections
Overview:
Divide students into small groups. Each group will examine their primary source materials and work with the appropriate activity sheet to prepare a short (3 paragraphs) newspaper article based on their materials.
List of Materials:
- Packet of Primary Source Materials for each group (see below)
- Dateline: History Activity Sheet: pdf file or Word document
- Vocabulary List: pdf file or Word document
- Franklin County, Ohio 1910 Map pdf file may be helpful for this activity. As printing large maps can be expensive, try printing the map on a transparency and projecting the image for the class.
- Pencils or pens
- Paper
Instructions:
- Print enough primary source material packets and activity sheets for each student or group.
- Divide the class into small cooperative groups and distribute the primary source, activity sheet and vocabulary list packets to each student or group.
- Explain to the students that they will become reporters who are going to write an article for the local newspaper. They will investigate their story by using primary source material to prepare their copy.
- Review the vocabulary list to familiarize the students with the terms used in journalism.
- Explain what a primary source is. Instruct the students to examine the primary source materials to draw inferences or conclusions for their article.
- Tell the students to work together to prepare their newspaper article. They should select a person to write the article.
- Set a time for the student groups to present their articles to the class.
- As an extension, the class might mock up a newspaper that would feature their articles, along with a masthead, advertisements, illustrations and cartoons.

These pages show the primary sources in more detail; including description, creator, creation place, and date for each source. For ease in application of the Dateline: History Activity, all sources have been converted into one PDF documents that will print one source per page (see below).
