About the Ohio Historical Society
The Ohio Historical Society is one of the nation's oldest and largest state historical societies. The society exists to interpret, preserve, collect, and make available evidence of the past, and to provide leadership on furthering knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the history of Ohio and the nation.
Among the Society's holdings are more than 142,555 books; 85,000 rolls of microfilm; 14,000 cubic feet of local government records; 15,000 maps; 20,000 volumes of newspapers; 45,000 cubic feet of state archives, manuscripts, photographs, and special collections. The Society's object collection includes over 1 million historical and archaeological artifacts and natural specimens. Finally, the Society administers sixty historical sites of state and national significance. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday and the Archives-Library is open Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
OHS staff includes educators, historians, archivists, curators, and librarians trained and experienced in providing access to the raw documents of history and conducting workshops in the use of primary sources in the classroom. The Archives/Library staff leads over 30 workshops a year in the use of primary source materials for genealogists, students, teachers, and historians and serves more than 45,000 researchers annually.
